Located on Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara, this lake is famous for having three crater lakes with unique water colors. What makes Lake Kelimutu so special is the changing color of the water in each crater. These lakes are known as Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Lake of the Son of the Dead), Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake of the Shroud Child), and Tiwu Ata Polo (Lake of the Old Child). Each lake has a different color of water, which varies between blue, green, red and black. This color change is caused by the reaction of minerals in the lake, as well as natural factors such as sunlight and weather. Apart from the beauty of its crater lakes, Lake Kelimutu also offers extraordinary natural scenery. You will find green mountain landscapes, shady trees, and cool fresh air. The area around the lake is also a habitat for various rare species of flora and fauna, including birds endemic to Flores. To reach Lake Kelimutu, you can fly to Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo or Maumere Airport in Maumere. From there, you can continue your journey overland to the village of Moni, which is the starting point for the hike to Lake Kelimutu. Hiking trips usually take around 2-3 hours, depending on fitness level and weather conditions. When visiting Lake Kelimutu, it is important to maintain cleanliness and protect the natural surroundings. Take care of your trash and follow the rules that apply in tourist areas.
